Somali Independence Celebration

Celebrating Somali Independence Day in St. Cloud

On July 3, 2026, Greater Minnesota Worker Center was honored to join community members, families, and local organizations at Lake George to celebrate Somali Independence Day. The annual celebration brought together people from across Central Minnesota for a day of culture, music, food, and community, honoring the rich history and enduring resilience of the Somali people.

St. Cloud is home to one of the largest Somali communities in Greater Minnesota. For decades, Somali families have enriched our region through their entrepreneurship, leadership, cultural traditions, and countless contributions to our schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and local economy. Their commitment to building strong communities continues to make Central Minnesota a more vibrant and welcoming place for everyone.

Somali Independence Day commemorates July 1, 1960, when the former British Somaliland and the Trust Territory of Somaliland (formerly administered by Italy) united to form the independent Republic of Somalia. The day marks a historic milestone in Somalia’s journey toward self-determination and remains a source of great pride for Somalis around the world.

Greater Minnesota Worker Center is proud to stand alongside the Somali American community in celebrating this important occasion. Events like Somali Independence Day strengthen relationships, preserve cultural heritage, and remind us of the power of community, solidarity, and belonging.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, performers, vendors, and everyone who helped make this year’s celebration such a wonderful success. We had an incredible time celebrating with you and look forward to continuing to build a stronger, more inclusive Central Minnesota together.

Happy Somali Independence Day!
